Frozen themed shared kid's Bedroom

It's not a secret that we are obsessed with the show 'Frozen' around here. Like most people I know, we have seen the movie and listened to the songs a million times. So, I thought the kids would enjoy having a Frozen themed room. When I presented the idea, they were both thrilled, more especially Diana because she knew what I was talking about. Mr Eli just went with the flow:)

I made this story board for my inspiration. I LOVE everything about it. At first, I was worried about having too much white, but I have become very fond of it and I really hope it works in 'real life.' Since my son and daughter will be sharing this room, I had to use neutral colors. I will be adding a pom pom garland, a picture wall gallery and maybe a floral wreath.

It will probably take me ages to achieve this look. I will be making the crib bedding and doing a lot of painting to cut on cost. I absolutely enjoyed my daughter's finished room here, it took forever but was worth it.

Diana's room reveal

It has been ages since I lasted blogged here. We finally found a place closer to my husband's work and school. We will be moving in the next coming days. Never been a fan of packing but I hope I will be all packed when the day finally comes.

It's funny that I finally finished my daughter's room in time for us to move. Next time I will be a little efficient with my timing. Anyway, here it is. Forgive me for the blurry pictures, I need to get a new camera. I have dropped this one way too many times.

The room is girlie, bright and very simple. We have both loved it.. even though it hasn't always been this tidy

This is a Costco Abby twin trundle bed going for $750. We got it on KSL for $80. The paint was less than $30. So, it was an awesome steal for us. I was 8 months pregnant with Eli when I started working on it. That was not fun. I made the night stand too; very imperfectly. I still need to fix the one leg in the back.

I made the comforter, pillow case and curtains. I will be sewing some more bedding in the very near future, I will include a tutorial then. I made them really simple and they have lasted a year and still looking great.

We got the fleece sheets on sale from Ross for $7. They are soft and warm, perfect for cooler weather

The lamp is from Target. It had a nickle finish and I spray painted it bronze

I made the pom poms here, the 'love birds' poster here and bought the cage at Hobby Lobby. It was a distressed blue color  and I spray painted it hot pink

The dresser came from my in-laws,  we sanded and painted it an 'antique white' color like the bed.

In our new place, the kids will share a room. I am eager and excited to start working on it. Hopefully it won't take me a year to finish it. I got some really cute inspirations on shared rooms here. I have been brain storming what colors will work best for a girl and boy's shared room. Do you have any suggestions for me?

 

Ballard Designs 'knock off' wish list

Yesterday, I spent some time day dreaming as I looked through a Ballard Designs catalog. I absolutely  love everything they sell there. As a result, I came up with my 'knock off wish list'. One day I will find time to make some of these goodies. Total price about $2,200 (wow)! not me, am sure something can be done about this:)

DIY Ship steering wheel

Here it is! another nautical room decor for Eli. I found a similar steering wheel from Hobby Lobby for $44. I had most of the stuff to make the wheel so, I only ended up paying $12:)

Here are the items you will need:
Round pine table top
Sisal rope
A bag of birch shaker pegs
2 Hardwood dowels
Classic grey wood finish

This table top is 1"x 17" big

I used my punch ball to make a round outline in the middle of the table top. Then I made another smaller circle in the middle.

Then I used my spade drill bit to drill1/2" holes. In total I had 16 holes on the larger piece. The 8 holes on the outer side were about 1/2" deep, just enough for the shaker pegs to go in. The other 8 inner holes were also about 1/2 deep also.

I used my variable speed jigsaw to cut out this, like here. The smaller piece is about 6.5" big and the larger piece is 3" wide. The space between is about 3.5".

The distance between the 2 pieces is about 3.5".

I also drilled 1/2" holes into the round middle piece. I cut out 8 dowels, about 4.5 inches long. With the round piece in the middle, I put some glue on my dowels and stuck them into the pre drilled holes. I wish I took more pictures. Then I put some more wood glue on the peg shakers and stuck them on the outer wheel.

I used a grey wood finish and after it was dry, I tied the rope around the wheel

Felt pom poms

Every little girl deserves some pom pom loving in her room. These turned out great. I made them using felt fabric from Joann's. The colors are hot pink, light pink and off white.

The balls are about 7″ big

What you need:

Felt fabric (I used 1/4 yards of fabric per ball)

Styrofoam balls

Glue gun

Glue sticks

Eye bolts

Thin ribbon

Scissors

1. I cut strips of fabric first, then cut them into squares (about 2.5″ x 2.5″). I got a few squares at once and cut out lots of circles.
2. Put some glue in the middle of the circle
3. Fold the circle in half and let the glue stick
4. Add more glue and fold again

Add glue to the tips of the fabric then stick it to the ball.

I love how they compliment the room

I used a ribbon to hang them up. I tied one end of the ribbon to the bolts and hot glued the other end to the balls. They haven't fallen off so far, so it's safe to say they are stable. I am just doing the final touches in Diana’s room. I still need to take a picture of her to hang in her room, and spray paint a few picture frames. Then we should be good to go.Come back for the room reveal this coming Monday Wednesday. I am so excited..

Whale wall decor

Remember the  nautical nursery storyboard for Eli's room? Well, this is the one piece I was not so sure I could pull off. I must say it was very thrilling to make, it looks awesome and its quite big. The whale measures 34" x 20" long

This is what you will need:
2 red cedar fence board
Newspaper (or any large piece of paper)
9 mending plates
Minwax wood finish
Picture hangers
A rug or paint brush
A pen or pencil

Here is my inspiration picture from PBK. I have no idea how much it costs. I even wonder if they ever sold it, it was just part of the room and I loved it. I found these kind of whales for $100 on Etsy and it only cost me about $12 to make my very own..hurray!

Cut boards in half and arrange them like above. Draw a picture of a whale on the newspaper (if you look closely, you will see I had to adjust and redraw mine several times). Cut out the drawing from your paper and using a pencil draw alone the edges of the cutout onto the boards.

Then I whipped out my favorite tool of all times. My saw, this is one item I would take with me to my grave yes our relationship is that deep. I have used it on all my wood cutting projects, love it love it love it!!

Cut up all my pieces, one board at a time

Is that cool or what? The jig saw cut through this board like it was butter. It's the first time I have used it for something this precise and it delivered:)

I turned it around and screwed in the mending plates where the boards came together. Then I nailed in the picture hangers, one on the tail and the other on the head (not shown in picture).

I used this stain, love this stuff

DIY Bird Poster

Its official, I love wood pallets. They are very affordable and easy to work with.
So, here is another poster for Diana's room. It is taking me a lot longer to finish her room then I anticipated. No worries, one day I will get it all done:)

Materials needed:

Wood from Home depot
Wood finish, I used walnut stain from home depot
White spray paint  from home depot
Black and hot pink acrylic paint from hobby lobby
Paint brushes
Graphite paper from hobby lobby
Printer

If you don't have a cricut machine, or if you don't want to purchase silhouettes like me, you can easily draw your own birds. I drew mine on regular printer paper. Then I got the graphite paper, laid it on my wood and put the bird picture on top. I used a non working pen (you can use whatever pointy device you have) to draw around the edges of my images. I used the same process with the words, 'love birds.' I used microsoft word to type my words, I like the font..

This is how it looked like after I was done.

Then I used black acrylic paint to fill in the outlined images

It turned out so well, I will never cry for a cricut machine again!

I got the lamp from target. I probably won't have it there when am all done with this room. I got the bird cage from hobby lobby for just $9 (with a 40% coupon). It was a light green color, then I painted it white, then light pink, and now its hot pink. I am thinking of painting it light pink again, haha, decisions, decisions

The lighting in my pictures is not that great because I took them at night while my daughter was sleeping

The nest and eggs are from hobby lobby too. My daughter is so happy that she has birds and eggs of her own
